Essential Oils

oilsWhat are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are a liquid that has been distilled from the bark, leaves, and roots of plants.  Essential Oils were one of mankind’s first attempts at medicine and therapy, and we are still finding new uses for them today. Each one hosts a variety of health and wellness benefits such as:  anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial, stress reduction, weight management, and digestive support to name a few.

There are single essential oils made from one specific plant, or there are proprietary blends that are a combination of several different plants.  Both single essential oils and proprietary blends can beneficial for physical and mental wellness.

Delivery methods:

You can use essential oils in several different ways. The most common delivery methods are:

Topical- This is when it’s applied directly to your skin, hair, and nails. The oils can be diluted by mixing them with a “carrier” oil. You can choose a bunch of different carriers like coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, etc. Essential oils can be used to make lotions, scrubs, perfumes and even household cleaning products.

Aromatic- This all relies on your sense of smell. You can put essential oils in a diffuser, directly inhale it, or even wear it as perfume or cologne.

Internally- This method means the essential oils are taken orally to be digested. You can place a few drops on your tongue, put it in a pill capsule, or dripped into your favorite beverage.

Please follow the directions on how each essential oil should be taken. When purchasing your essential oil make sure to look at how the oil is to be used, but more importantly how it cannot be used.  For example, Conifer essential oil can be used topically but not internally. However, it can be used as a gargle for sore throats (still not ingested).

Essential oils can be very powerful, and should be overused or overdosed.

Disclaimer: Essential oils are great if they work for you and your body, but it’s not for everyone. You can be sensitive to anything, even natural, high quality products.  For example, some patients may have sensitivity to cinnamon, and some essential oil blends contain cinnamon. Make sure to read the ingredients carefully so that you can find what works best for you.
